Culture

World Heritage city, Dubrovnik is proud of its rich history, widely publicized in the city's many museums. But it is in the day-to-day that the intense cultural life manifests itself unambiguously

The biggest cultural event in town is the Summer Festival (www.dubrovnik-festival.hr), which takes place every year between July 10 and August 25 and receives some of the greatest Croatians actors, but also international guests. Goran Visnjic's is a usual presence, but Daniel Day-Lewis also has passed through here. Selections of great theater pieces, including many of Shakespeare’s stage plays, are represented here in beautiful outdoor settings, such as Fort Lovrjenac. During winter the theater goes back into the theater rooms, and the Marin Držic Theatre becomes a privileged stage. The Festivities of St. Blaise, in February, mark a starting point for an early Carnival, which only ends on Ash Wednesday. During this period the streets of the Old Town are filled with masks, although the costumes are more classical - such as Pierrots - or more contemporary, like punks and hippies. The Film Festival Libertas (www.libertasfilmfestival.com), held outdoors and of free access is another big cultural moment that has the purpose to show this city to actors, directors and producers, receiving many Hollywood stars. The Dubrovnik Film Meeting (www.sff.ba/en/dfm), organized together with the Sarajevo Film Festival, also has gained prominence. Dubrovnik is also a city with a strong musical tradition, often receiving classical music performances having the presence of the greatest international names. The local orchestras play regularly in churches and concert halls. In September the Julian Rachlin & Friends Festival (www.julianrachlin.hr) will take place in Dubrovnik, while in October the International Festival of Chamber Music is on the agenda. The visual arts have a constant presence in the Dubrovnik Museum of Art and in galleries such as Talir Gallery or Sebastian.
