Culture

A vibrant city with a full cultural agenda thanks to museums, art galleries, theatres, show venues and festivals. The events are everywhere!

Visual arts, theatre, musical shows, dance, comedy, cinema and sports are part of the city’s routine. Events happen everyday and the places where something interesting is occurring are so many that it is better to organize your agenda not to miss any. There are more than 50 museums and galleries to visit: from the Gallery of Costume (www.manchestergalleries.org) to the Wythenshawe Hall, the City Museum or the Manchester United Museum (www.manutd.com), there are choices for all ages and tastes. The show venues range from small spaces for new artists to stages for the well-established performers with capacities for thousands of people. The Free Trade Hall, The Bridgewater Hall, the Manchester Evening News Arena (www.men-arena.com) or the Royal Exchange Theatre are only a few of the places with regular programmes for all music genders. The musical tradition of the city is actually represented by the Manchester Sound, with its maximum exponent in the 80s and 90s with bands like The Smiths, James or Stone Roses. The theatre also has several stages, very different in size but also in their agenda. The great productions that succeeded in the West End of London regularly come to the Manchester Opera House (www.manchesteroperahouse.org), while the local drama school performs at the Capitol Theatre (www.capitoltheatre.mmu.ac.uk). To find out what’s on, it is helpful to visit the Manchester Theatres website (www.manchestertheatres.com). Each year Manchester welcomes a great number of festivals, many of which are outdoors. Manchester Irish Festival (March), Europe Festival (May and June), Manchester Jazz Festival (July), Manchester Summer Musical Madness (July), Manchester Poetry Festival (October) and Manchester Food and Drink Festival (October) are only a few of the annual events.
