The gardens right in the heart of the city offer complete tranquillity, and for whoever likes the wilder side of nature, there are over twenty nature parks in the surrounding area.

Malaga is the home of one of the finest tropical gardens in Europe, the historic “La Concepción” Botanic Garden (www.jardinlaconcepcion.es) with hundreds of plant types and species, as well as waterfalls and fountains; it has over 150 years of history. It is the ideal place to relax among palm trees from all around the world and on a summer’s day can be a refuge from the heat. The Retiro Park, which dates back to the seventeenth century, is also famous for its tropical environment, with several species of birds that inhabit the trees. The Paseo del Parque is another ideal place to relax, this time closer to the sea, offering a landscape of trees, statues and fountains which create an ideally tranquil setting.Whoever wants to get away from the city can choose from among 23 protected areas in the region. The nature parks of Sierra de las Nieves, Montes de Málaga, Sierras de Tejeda, Alhama y Almijara, Alcornocales and Sierra de Grazalema or places such as Pinsapo de las Escaleretas, Tornillo El Torcal, Cañón de las Buitrera Falla de la Sierra del Calamorro and the dunes of Artola o Cabopino are easily accessible by car, although in some more remote areas it is advisable to use four wheel drive vehicles.
