Funchal attracts visitors from all around the world. A true pearl of the Atlantic Ocean, the gastronomy, history, flora and fauna these features the city’s scenario. The mild and temperate climate makes it an ideal destination any time of year.

On the road from the airport to Funchal, until we haven’t reached the city center, the cluster of houses on the hills and mountains makes us realize that Funchal is ultimately much more than we expected. The rural environment of the mountains contrasts with the modernity of the Marina and downtown with all the shopping, or even with the touristic potential of Lido. The capital of Madeira has 76 square kilometers and has over 98 000 inhabitants that spread across ten parishes. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the city is named for its first settlers that when arrived, found a lot of fennel, a sweet-smelling herb. Even today, whoever visits will not leave without tasting the famous fennel sweets and of course the delicious bolo do caco, the limpets or “espetadas”. The mild climate invites you to go up the mountain riding a cable car until you reach the Botanical Garden and on your way down the descent is pretty special: the tight and twisted streets of the city set the tone for one of its most famous traditions, the basket cart descents. The route begins in Monte and ends in the city center. The cars are handled by two men, called “carreiros” who provide moments of pure adrenaline and emotion for the tourists.
