St. Petersburg: The Great City

From the vibrant colours of spring and the sunny days of summer to the glorious golden sun of autumn and the fragile luminescence of winter in Saint Petersburg, the city casts its special spell on visitors.

Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great. The city lives up to its founder’s name. Great in the magnitude of its landscape, great in the richness of its architecture that tends toward imperial sumptuousness and great also in the events that it has witnessed and that have produced the cultural traditions the city celebrates today.

Great in the identities it has conjured up and the vast array of art movements it has inspired.
To visit Saint Petersburg is to breathe the air of times gone by and the stories that are etched in the proud charms of the city’s many museums and monuments. The historic centre, a UNESCO World heritage site, encompasses the Hermitage, the Cathedral of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, Mariinsky Theatre, Peterhof and the Tsarskoye Selo, among many others.

The city is also known for its “White Nights” when the sun does not set – an invitation from nature to spend more time enjoying the dazzling beauty of the unique place that is Saint Petersburg.
