Malangatana is an essential reference, but the cultural life of Maputo is being shaken by local and foreign cultural institutions that help create an itinerary of diversified activities.

The Mozambican painter Malangatana recently deceased is an indispensable figure of the country’s culture, Malangatana House and Museum at the Airport District is an obligatory stop. The Theatre Company Gungu or MBEU Drama Group also have an important activity in the spreading of the stage arts. Maputo is also stage to Dockanema (www.dockanema.wordpress.com), a documentary film festival, which now has five editions. The fine arts have regular programs in places such as Espaço Joaquim Chissano (www.bci.co.mz) or in Casa da Cultura Alto Maé.
