Shopping options are not lacking in the bustling city that welcomes tourists from all over the world. From traditional markets to retailers, there are souvenirs and gifts in general for all tastes and budgets. The districts in the South - like those of Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana - are those that usually attract and concentrate more tourists.

If you're thinking of walking through Ipanema, you cannot miss going window shopping at the famous Rua Visconde de Piraja. In this real outdoor shopping-mall the offers are huge and the prices as well, since, besides famous brands shops, there are also other more timid ones, but also with tempting offers. To try something different and more typical, try the Feirinha Hippie (hippie market), also in Ipanema (on Sunday mornings), which takes place in the Praça General Osório. There, you will find a wide variety of products, from clothes and shoes to jewellery and decorative objects. As Ipanema is also the birthplace of Bossa Nova, take the opportunity to enter the shop Toca do Vinicius and buy articles related to music. This area also does small concerts and exhibits personal objects belonging to the poet Vinicius de Moraes. Another option is the most famous district of Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana. Here, visit the traditional Menescal Gallery (open for more than 60 years, with 30 shops of the most varied articles), the Santa Clara 33 and the Modern Sound music store. To save money, it is best to escape the most popular tourist areas. Just look for the area known as the Saara (Society of Friends and Surroundings of the Rua da Alfândega), where the locals get their supplies and where you can find some bargains.
