Ramp
For passengers with reduced mobility who are able to go up and down stairs and move around inside the aircraft, the greatest obstacle is the distance to and from the plane.
This type of wheelchair will be available at check-in if requested when booking.
Steps
This applies to reduced-mobility passengers who are unable to go up or down stairs.
This service is free of charge.
Wheelchair to Seat
For their own comfort and safety, passengers travelling with wheelchairs and who have great difficulty in moving around or are dependent on others, should not travel alone.
However, passengers wishing to travel alone who are able to ensure their own physical mobility will be allowed to travel.
TAP allows these passengers to travel alone, but will not guarantee any on-board assistance if they claim to be independent, such as help using the toilets, standing up, carrying or feeding.
These passengers do not need a doctor's permission to travel. They only need to indicate that it is a medical case if they have health problems.
There is no waiting list for this facility.
Wheelchairs on Board
On TAP's long-haul fleet, an on-board wheelchair is available to take them to the toilets during long flights.
Passenger’s own Wheelchair
- Passengers wishing to travel with their own wheelchair must give 48 hours' advance warning.
- They must indicate the type of wheelchair and battery.
Reduced Mobillity
As of 13 May 2009, OPO/LIS/EWR airports have a copy of DOT, 14 CFR Part 382 ACAA on Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability in Air Travel; Final Rule available for any passenger requesting to read it.
It is also possible to obtain a copy of Part 382 of the DOT or more information from bob.ashby@dot.gov and blane.workie@dot.gov.
