TAP pioneering in environmental programme singled out by IATA

2009-06-09

TAP received an award today from IATA (International Air Transport Association) for having been the first airline company in the world to adhere to the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Emission Offset Program developed by this Association. Acknowledgement of the pioneering spirit of the Portuguese airline company was marked with the awarding of a celebrative plaque received by Fernando Pinto, TAP CEO at the close of the 65th IATA General Meeting which ends today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and which gathered together more than 500 of those responsible for airline companies, aircraft manufacturers and institutions in the sector.

“I see this program as an excellent opportunity for TAP to offer our customers a practical voluntary tool for offsetting their carbon emissions, allowing them the possibility of associating themselves with the efforts of the company to become steadily more efficient with a view to minimizing its contribution to climate change”, said Fernando Pinto about the project.

The IATA carbon offset program was launched by TAP last June 5 marking World Environment Day. Hence, passengers have the opportunity to offset the CO2 emissions resulting from their flights, making their contribution to the reduction of emissions in developing countries through enrolment in the program. At the event, Giovanni Bisignani, CEO and director-general of the IATA stated he was “very satisfied by the fact TAP is the pioneering company in the launch of the IATA CO2 Emission Offset Program”. “This program sets a good example of leadership in this industry in terms of economic measures, reinforcing our commitment to a broader strategy of combating climate change based on four pillars: improved technology, effective infrastructure, operating efficiency and positive economic measures”, he concluded.

This new CO2 offset program available since last week via the TAP website: www.flytap.com, enables customers to decide when booking online whether they voluntarily wish to offset the inevitable carbon emissions resulting from their flight, hence reducing their carbon footprint. The result of each contribution will be invested in Aquarius, a renewable energy project located in Brazil that has been selected by TAP.
