All children under the age of 12, traveling alone, are considered Unaccompanied Minors.
If you wish to book a trip for a child under 12 years old, that will travel unaccompanied, you must make the reservation through a Call Center or Ticket Counter.
It is not possible to make this type of reservation online, as it follows special cares and procedures.
- Additional Assistant
At the request of the parents or legal guardians of a child, TAP can arrange for a Monitor for minors with ages ranging from three (3) months to five (5) years of age in the event these are traveling alone.
When making a reservation you should mention what language is spoken by the child.
Babies younger than 3 months of age are not allowed.
All children between 3 months and 4 years inclusive of age travelling alone require companions.
Minors must be accompanied to the airport and throughout the entire check-in procedure and customs formalities by the parents, legal guardians or someone authorized by one of the latter, and remain in the airport until flight departure. Equally, minors are required to have someone waiting for them at their destination airport, by someone authorized by their parents or legal guardians.
Parents or guardians are responsible for arranging for the minor’s necessary travel documents. They have to fill out an ID document for minors signed by the parents or legal guardians.
The hostess will occupy a seat which will be charged. In addition to the cost incurred by the child monitor, the child will also be charged an adult ticket price and not the respective child tariff.
The amount corresponds to a One Way ticket tariff and will be based on the flight origin and destination. For example, on a Funchal – Lisbon – London flight, if the child only requires a monitor for the Funchal – Lisbon leg, the tariff to be charged for the hostess service will be the price published for Funchal – London, regardless of whether the same completes the Lisbon – London leg or not.
Cancellations:
If the minor is a no-show or the Additional Assistant is cancelled less than four days prior to departure, no reimbursement is available.
Prices to be paid for Additional Assistants:
- A one-way, full-fare price is applied*
- Children and/or babies pay 100% of the normal or special price for adult passengers.
- No airport taxes are charged for ESHO.
*Economy Class One Way TAP fares, when existing, will apply except to/from Sal, Bissau, Maputo, S. Tome and Luanda.
Unaccompanied Minors:
TAP does not accept children between 3 months and 4 years of age as unaccompanied minors. TAP can arrange for an escort person at the request of the parents/legal guardians.
Between 3 to 4 years of age inclusive they may be accompanied by another passenger between 12 and 15 years of age as long as “Unaccompanied Minor” procedures are applied to both.
Passengers over 12 years of age may accompany a child over 5 years of age as long as their capacity as accompanying person is declared for the entire trip including acceptance, check-in and all airport formalities.
Between 5 and 11 years of age passengers traveling alone are always classed as “Unaccompanied Minors".
Between 12 and 17 years of age inclusive passengers may exceptionally be classed as "Unaccompanied Minors" at the request of their parents or those responsible for their education.
TAP does not accept bookings on waiting lists.
Whenever a booking for a UMNR (Unaccompanied Minor) is requested/confirmed TAP must be notified of the name and respective contact details (telephone number, address) of the persons bringing the child to the airport and those collecting them.
Fares:
- “Unaccompanied Minor” from 5 to 7 years: Pay 100% of the applicable adult fare for the trip
- “Unaccompanied Minor” from 8 to 11 years: Normally pay the applicable Child rate for the trip; however, it will be necessary to consult the price observation in order to see exceptions.

Legislation about Minors
Foreign minors born in Portugal
Minors under these conditions benefit from the resident statute in the same manner as that which is conceded to any of their parents.
In order to request the issuance of the respective residence title, either one of the parents should present the request during the six months following the birth registration of the minor.
Entrance of minors in national territory
In order to enter into Portugal, foreigners less than 18 years of age should be accompanied by whomever holds paternal power, or should have in Portuguese territory someone properly authorized by the legal representative to be responsible for their stay in the country.
Departure of minors from national territory
In order to leave Portugal, minors that are travelling unaccompanied from whoever holds paternal power, should present at the port of entry an authorization permitted by the same, legally certified.
