Information about Lisbon

Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, is a city that rises splendidly from the top of its seven hills and screams out poetry in all directions. The winding streets and alleys make it a place you want to embrace over and over again. There’s no better way to feel Lisbon than catching a tram to discover every nook and cranny of the Chiado or Baixa quarters and let yourself be swept along by the kindness of the city’s people. A must-do for any visitor is to drink a cup of coffee at the A Brasileira coffee shop and exchange views with the mythical statue of Fernando Pessoa. In the evening, why not head to Belém and try a pastel de nata custard tart by the river? They say it's among the world’s tastiest and the views over the River Tagus just enhance the experience. In Belém we are also treated to stately buildings that look good in any camera lens. We can assure you there is nothing easier than falling in love with the Padrão dos Descobrimentos monument, the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos monastery and, of course, the Torre de Belém tower.

A wandering route through the central Lisbon quarters is good for the heart and soul. Let's start in Alfama or Mouraria, where the traditions are more alive than ever and the streets fill with colour, grilled sardines and music at least once a year. It is worth discovering the Santos Populares festival and its carnival parades, because there's really no other party like it! A visit to the Sé de Lisboa cathedral is also always welcome and a climb up to the São Jorge castle is a sensation that is difficult to put into words. Lisbon is so rich that it cannot simply be packed into a few paragraphs: Terreiro do Paço square, Museu dos Coches coach museum, Museu do Azulejo tile museum, Rossio station, Avenida da Liberdade, Marquês de Pombal statue. The hardest part is choosing where to start! If you prefer more avant-garde and modern spaces, take the metro to the Gare do Oriente station and discover Parque das Nações – where Expo 98 was staged. This is a great place to take a walk, enjoy the fresh air and visit the Oceanarium, where you will be amazed by the marine biodiversity that lives there.

But Lisbon has much more to offer! Each point of the city is a viewing point open to the world where we take in a swathe of the city’s cosmopolitan bustle and the beautiful architecture that greets us on every corner. Lisbon is history and stories and it is fado singing in the voice of Amália Rodrigues and so many other singers drifting through the streets and typical quarters, day and night. In the middle of the bustle, there's always time to try a homemade caldo verde soup, a tasty cod or, who knows, cozido à portuguesa stew and drink a beer in the Bairro Alto, where people of all ages give life and colour to a jumble of streets.
