TAP punctuality hit 75,9 percent for departures during the first quarter of 2008 coming close to average levels for AEA companies in this period (79,7%) and consolidating the positive evolution already observed in the final months of the previous year. In a comparison with January, February and March 2007, each of the three months improved by 11, 15 and 18 percent respectively.
Baggage delivery delays also demonstrated a significant improvement though more accentuated improvements depend on the entry into operation of a new connections’ baggage terminal that the ANA forecasts for the second half of the year. In March, TAP reduced delays from 34.5 baggage items per thousand passengers registered in 2007 to 17.3, following on from a series of months in which systematic improvements have been verified.
In particular, creation of the TAP Customer Service Department, changes verified at Groundforce - the handling service provider - which refocused on its true vocation of providing good customer services as well as improved coordination with other entities associated with baggage operations, namely airport authorities, have contributed to this improvement.
These improvements have been possible without being affected by growth in TAP traffic volume. As such, a 25.9 percent increase in the number of passengers transported has been registered over this period, reaching around 1.9 million passengers in total and with growth in all sectors of the TAP network.
Of these, Europe in particular stands out, which witnessed an increase of 250 thousand passengers (+30.3%), Brazil with more than 68 thousand passengers (+31.1%) and Africa with more than 17 thousand (+17.5%).
At Lisbon airport, growth totaled 22.9 percent while in the north of the country at Sa Carneiro airport growth totaled 38.7 percent.
To these important increases in traffic, the contribution of PGA is registered, operating TAP flights since July 2007, new legs created in recent months to Europe, extra flights on others, the creation of new destinations in Brazil (Brasilia and Belo Horizonte) as well as extra flights to Africa.
