Hand baggage

When travelling with us (flights operated by TAP and TAP express) you can travel with hand baggage in the aircraft cabin, with a maximum size up to 55X40x20cm.

Your baggage must be within the permitted limits (number, size and weight) In order for it to be free of charge. These limits depend on your flight destination. Find out everything:

If travelling to/from domestic destinations (including the islands), Europe, Africa and North America you can carry on the aircraft:

8 kg / 17 lbs If flying Economy Class: 1 piece of baggage up to 8 kg / 55x40x20 cm / 22x16x8 in + 1 personal item up to 2 Kg / 40x30x15 cm / 16x12x5 in.
8 kg / 17 lbs In Executive Class *: 2 pieces of baggage up to 8 kg / 55x40x20 cm / 22x16x8 in + 1 personal item up to 2 Kg / 40x30x15 cm / 16x12x5 in.

*Except to/from North America: 1 piece of baggage up to 8 kg / 55x40x20 cm / 22x16x8 in + 1 personal item up to 2 Kg / 40x30x15 cm / 16x12x5 in.

If travelling to/from destinations in South America, you can carry on the aircraft:

10 kg / 22 Ibs If flying Economy Class: 1 piece of baggage up to 10 kg / 55x40x20 cm / 22x16x8 in.
8 kg / 17 lbs In Executive Class *: 2 pieces of baggage up to 8 kg / 55x40x20 cm / 22x16x8 in + 1 personal item up to 2 Kg / 40x30x15 cm / 16x12x5 in.

What can be a personal item?

A purse or a computer bag or shoulder bag (maximum size: 40x30x15 cm / 16x12x5 in);
Auxiliary mobility equipment;
Medical devices (by prescription/prior approval);
With a maximum weight of 2 Kg/4.4 Ib.

Confirm in advance that your hand baggage is within the permitted limits (in terms of number, size and weight). If you exceed any of these requirements your baggage will be checked into the hold and you will be charged a fee at the boarding gate. Payment will only be possible by credit card.

If you exceed the permitted limits in terms of number of pieces, size and/or weight, the respective charges will be paid at the boarding gate, and payment is only possible by credit card.

Where to stow the hand baggage

The hand baggage must be placed underneath the seat in front, whenever possible.

If is too big, or if you are seated in the emergency exit row or the first row of the cabin, the baggage should be placed in the luggage compartment.

On flights with a very high occupancy rate, it may be necessary to check the hand baggage in the hold due to the lack of space on board. When this happens, the baggage will be handed over at the boarding gate and delivered on the baggage reclaim carousel at the destination.

Important information In some aircraft operated by TAP Express (Embraer 190 and ATR 72-600), there may be additional limitations due to space constraints in the aircraft cabin and luggage compartment.

Selfie sticks and electronic cigarettes can be transported in the cabin, but their use is strictly prohibited.

There are items that cannot be transported in the cabin, for security reasons. Please see the dangerous items section.

Televisions and other screens

For security reasons, it is not allowed to transport this type of items. However, it is possible to carry these devices as cargo. For more information, see TAP Air Cargo website.

Transporting animal or vegetable food or by-products to Brazil

Transportation of alcoholic beverages and other liquids as hand baggage

Alcoholic beverages - up to 24% alcohol and from 24% to 70% alcohol:
1) when purchased outside the airport, they must comply with the limits on the carrying of liquids on board.
2) When bought in the duty free shops (inside the airport), they comply with the rules of the local authorities of the final destination.
3) Transportation of handcrafted drinks is not permitted.
4) Alcoholic beverages transported as hand luggage cannot be consumed on board.

The transport of liquids on board is only authorised in containers of up to 100 millilitres and no more than 1 litre per passenger. These should be packed in a transparent plastic bag with an easy opening and closing system, 19 cm x 20 cm in size.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer

The total net quantity of all such articles carried by each passenger must not exceed 2 kg or 2 L and the net quantity of each single article must not exceed 0.5 kg or 0.5 L.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer is acceptable as carry-on or checked baggage. However, it should be noted that where passengers wish to have the hand sanitizer in their carry-on baggage that the limit of 100 mL or equivalent per item for liquids and gels in accordance with the aviation security provisions applies.

Security restriction (100mL) does not apply to passengers transporting the hand sanitizer on flights departing from Portugal. For flights departing other countries, these restrictions may vary upon each National Authority assessment.
