Long haul

We are now offering you the option to choose a seat in your favorite part of the aircraft where you feel most comfortable. We have created three areas* in the economy class cabin:

  • EconomyXtra area – red seats;
  • Extra Legroom / Emergency exit - emergency exit rows;
  • Economy area - green seats.
* Type of meals served, on long haul flights, is the same for the three areas of economy class.

EconomyXtra benefits on long-haul flights:

Traveling on EconomyXtra gives you priority boarding access*: no hurry and no queues so you can get the most out of your TAP experience. Seats are located in the front rows, the quietest area in the aircraft. Spacious seats to give you maximum comfort during your trip. 

In addition to these benefits, EconomyXtra also offers: dedicated luggage compartment, electrical and USB outlets for your device, tablet holder, reclining seats, and more legroom.

Terms and conditions for booking Extra Legroom / Emergency exit seating:

To book this type of seating you must:
  • Understand and speak Portuguese and/or English;
  • Be able to move quickly;
  • Be over the age of 12 (these seats are not available to children, accompanied or unaccompanied, or babies);
  • Not have a cabin animal;
  • Not be a deportee, considered an inadmissible passenger or be in custody;
  • Not have a physical or sensory impairment that may imply difficulty in understanding written or verbal instructions. 

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the time limit to book and pay for the seats?


Seats can be reserved at any time. In the case of tickets without this benefit included, and if you do not want to pay extra for this service, seats are allocated automatically at check-in (either online or at the airport). Any changes will be charged depending on the TAP Product and the seat requested.

This service is not applicable for Ponte Aérea between Lisbon and Porto or vice-versa.

How do I book a seat?


There are three ways to book:

When is there a right to a refund?

  • If you are allocated a cheaper seat. Should this happen you will be refunded the difference in cost in vouchers;
  • In involuntary cases (for example missing a connection through a fault of the company) you will receive a refund of the full amount of the service you did not receive.
Under what circumstances is there no right to a refund?
  • If you are allocated a different seat, but one that is of the same type;
  • If you cancel your flight you will not be eligible for a refund, although you may receive a voucher to use on the same service within 12 months of issue;
  • If you book an emergency exit seat without meeting the requirements.

What happens if the aircraft is changed?


Our system will do all it can to replace the seat you selected with another with the same characteristics. The chosen/allocated seat row may also be changed; however, the system will make sure you are allocated a new seat of the same type. For instance, seat 4C, which is a “EconomyXtra” seat may be changed to 6D, which is also a “EconomyXtra” seat.
