Maputo: 1001 Surprises

It was once called Lourenço Marques — name of the Portuguese trader who explored the land — and it is now known as the City of Acacias — due to the amount of these type of trees that surrounds the avenues.

Iron Walls

Destined to the Governor of Maputo, the Iron House was designed by the known Gustave Eiffel. However, this building has been used to many other purposes. Therefore, inside these walls have worked people of a court, an education institute, a museum, among others. Nowadays, it is home to the National Cultural Direction of Monuments and Museums and is perhaps the most well-conserved building of the city.
Inhaca, Maputo’s Oasis

In here, reigns beauty, harmony, sea sounds and the colours of nature. Inhaca Island is perfect for tourists who like to have a walk by the sea, away from the busy avenues. It is close to the capital, but it’s a retreat. A place where you can renew energies, empty and relax your mind. In Inhaca you’ll get away from stress and city noises. You’ll be able to observe the magnificent coral reefs, marine species, birds and the people of the island.

61 Impressive Meters

Opened in 1944, Maputo’s Cathedral — whose oficial name is Church of Our Lady Conception — is located in Independence Square. It was designed by the engineer Marcial Freitas e Costa and its construction reflects the work of several portuguese artists such as Francisco Franco, António Lino, Simões de Almeida, Leopoldo de Almeida and António Maia Ribeiro. Majestic and covered in white, it constrasts with the clear sky and it is the See of Maputo’s Archdiocese.

Home of Islam

The capital has two mosques and the older one is known as Maputo’s Mosque. It was built in the 20th Century and it is the main element of identification of Islamic faith in Maputo. It is a place with a very particular identity that stands out from the construction pattern of mosques. You can visit it and learn its historical background.
Lemon Squeezer

No, we’re not talking about a typical instrument of Maputo, but instead of the popularly named Church of Saint Anthony of Polana. This nickname came from its modern structure that resembles a lemon squeezer with firm and well defined edges that unite in the top and separate in the bottom. Its interior also has an uncommun beauty with stained-glass that lit it perfectly.
Wild Paths

We can’t leave Mozambique without paying a visit to Kruger Park. Approximately 120km away from Maputo, in here we have the true feeling of being in the jungle. It’s a park where animals live with no human interference. There are no cages, no chains nor tricks. There is life, colour and freedom. Going on a safari is an unique experience that you won’t want to miss and will want to repeat!
