Helpo

HELPO has been encouraging development through education and nutrition in countries such as Portugal, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and Guinea Bissau, since 2008. It operates in 38 rural communities and 52 intervention centres, through the construction of schools, libraries, nursery schools, nutrition centres, school canteens, rainwater harvesting systems, community training, health education, care and continuous training. HELPO is funded through the Distance Child Sponsorship Program, donations and projects funded by international agencies and companies, to support more than 19,000 children.

Between 2017 and 2018, TAP's Solidarity Miles Programme has provided transport for seven members of the Sao Tome and Principe team to travel, namely:
  • Four nutritionists - focused on the mother and child nutritional monitoring programme;
  • Two project managers - focused on the administrative and logistical organisation of the activities of the education support area in the country;
  • One coordinator – who monitored and evaluated the actions, ensuring the operation of all activities within formal requirements.
The same programme also allowed six people assigned to projects in Mozambique to travel, namely:
  • One trainer;
  • One operations director;
  • One project manager;
  • One volunteer – who monitored and assessed the activities;
  • Two ambassadors – who ran visibility actions, such as lectures at universities, participation in a solidarity race, contacts with the Portuguese Ambassador in Maputo, distribution of 110 bicycles to students of the HELPO scholarship program, interviews to the RTP news programme.
HELPO, through the TAP Solidarity Miles Programme, has saved the amount needed to build a classroom and a block of latrines for students.
