Filhos do Coração

The Filhos do Coração project seeks to report child slavery, rescuing and rehabilitating children who are the victims of this scourge. There are parents in Ghana who sell their own children for less than 30 euros to traffickers who resell them to the fishermen of Lake Volta. These children are forced to work 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, in exchange for a single meal of cassava. The Filhos do Coração project has already rescued 93 children from child slavery in the Lake Volta fishery and now protects them by providing them with health, education, food and security.

Four missions were sent to Ghana between 2016 and 2018 with the support of the TAP Solidarity Miles Programme to develop a range of activities as well as hold the annual meeting with the Touch a Life partner.
  • Therapy through Art: with the participation of the Portuguese artist, Diogo Navarro, who painted with the Filhos do Coração children;
  • The Love Blanket: a project developed by children in Portuguese schools, where each child embroidered a patch with a message, which resulted in a patchwork blanket filled with messages of love and hope offered to the children of Ghana;
  • Donation of goods: school material, clothes, shoes, and so on;
  • Medical intervention: participation of a psychologist to observe and assess identified cases and the participation of a specialist in sign language;
  • Rescue Smiles: development of activities and surprises, such as participating in the colour run and living the magic world of the artist Paula Teixeira, through the numerous characters she has created.
A team of six people travelled to Ghana in March 2018 with the support of TAP Air Portugal. They carried Forty 23 kg boxes, filled with clothes, shoes, school material, toys, football equipment, and so on. New missions are planned for August 2018 and March 2019, under the TAP Solidarity Miles Programme.
