Travel to the United Kingdom

Check out all the useful information to ensure your trip runs smoothly.

From 1 October 2021, passengers entering the UK from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland must present a valid passport.

Additionally, under the new digital border control system, from 25 February 2026, all travellers to the UK will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or an eVISA, depending on the length of their stay.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

The ETA is a mandatory digital travel permit for travellers visiting or transiting through the UK for up to six months.

This authorisation:

  • Must be requested prior to travel;
  • Is valid for two years (unless the passport expires first);
  • Is electronically linked to a passport, eliminating the need to present paper documentation;
  • Does not guarantee entry into the UK, standard passport control procedures still apply.

eVISA

The eVISA must be obtained by travellers visiting or transiting through the UK for six months or longer.

eVISA:

  • Is linked to a passport;
  • Must be printed for the trip, if possible;
  • Is only valid if the UKVI account details are up to date.
