Musical instrument as free hand baggage

Musical instruments can be included in hand baggage accepted free of charge, as long as they comply with the limits permitted by TAP:

Booking of seat for a large musical instrument

If your musical instrument does not meet the weight and size limits permitted for hand baggage, you can travel with it next to you in the aircraft cabin. To do this, you must reserve an extra seat to accommodate the instrument, complying with the following limits:

Maximum weight 30 kg / 66.13 lbs. Maximum dimensions: 55 x 42 x 25 cm / 61 x 17 x 10 in, if placed on the cabin floor, or 110 x 42 x 50 cm / 43 x 17 x 20 in, if placed on top of the seat (height x length x width).

The booking of an extra seat in the cabin, for the transport of your musical instrument, can only be made through the TAP Contact Center, a TAP counter at the airport or a Travel Agency.

Conditions

This service is subject to availability;
The refund for this service depends on the rules of the fare applicable to the extra seat purchased;
This service is only available on flights operated by TAP or operated on its behalf and by TAP Express;
For safety reasons, booking an extra seat to transport a bulky musical instrument is not permitted for passengers seating near emergency exits;
When you purchase a ticket for a flight and book an extra seat at the same time, the same ticket fare will be applied to that extra seat, plus the fuel tax and service charge for each extra seat required;
If you use this service on only one of the routes (outbound or inbound) of a round trip, the lowest price available at the time of booking will be applied to the extra seat(s), taking into account the fare of your ticket. The fuel tax and service charge will then be added for each additional seat required;
If the extra seat is added after your ticket has been purchased, it will be subject to seat availability and prices applicable on the date of booking, plus the fuel tax and service charge for each extra seat required;

Musical instruments can be included in free hold baggage, as long as they comply with the limits permitted by TAP:

If you carry more pieces of baggage than permitted by your fare, or exceed the maximum weight and size limits described above, additional airport transport service fees will apply. These fees are non-refundable.

If it is a fragile and highly valuable item, the musical instrument must be adequately prepared for the trip with a rigid container packaging specifically designed for shipping this type of baggage;
If your musical instrument exceeds the weight and size specifications permitted in the aircraft's hold, it must be transported as Cargo;
This musical instrument transportation service on aircraft's hold is only available on flights operated by TAP, or operated on its behalf, and by TAP Express;
This service is subject to availability.

Musical instrument as special hold baggage

Any musical instruments that exceed the number of items, weight and dimensions allowed for transportation as free hold baggage, will be considered special hold baggage. In these cases, you must add the transport of your musical instrument as an extra baggage / service at least 24h before your flight, subject to availability. When purchasing this service online, you will need to select the size of the instrument to be transported:

Small instrument

Up to 23 kg / 50 lbs .

Medium instrument

Up to 32 kg / 70 lbs .

Large instrument

Up to 45 kg / 99 lbs .

Small instrument

Up to 23 kg / 50 lbs .

Medium instrument

Up to 32 kg / 70 lbs .

Large instrument

Up to 45 kg / 99 lbs .

(1) For the instrument already packed, the following maximum permitted dimensions apply: 330 cm / 130 in (height x length x width).

For most destinations, the packed instrument cannot exceed 45 kg / 99 lbs. However, if the trip has a destination, origin or stopover in the USA, Hungary, France, United Kingdom, Ireland or the Netherlands, the weight limit is 32 kg / 70 lbs.

The fee of this service is non-refundable, even when the Upgrade service is purchased (whether through an auction or fixed price, with cash or miles). However, if, after purchasing this service, the original fare is changed, at the passenger's discretion, and the ticket is reissued on a Business Class fare that already includes this service, you may request a refund. In this situation, the musical instrument must comply with the limits of number of pieces, weight and dimensions permitted by the Business fare;
This service is only available on flights operated by TAP, or operated on its behalf, and by TAP Express;
This service is subject to availability.
Payment for this extra service, with miles, is possible during or after the booking process, via flyTAP (hereor through Manage your Booking) or the TAP Contact Center.
