Prohibited and dangerous items on board

Put your safety and that of others first. Learn what you can and cannot bring on board our aircrafts.

Important information

It is prohibited to transport powdered substances weighing 350 g or more in the aircraft cabin. This prohibition does not apply to prescription items, baby powder milk, human remains, or containers with powdered products purchased in the Duty-Free shopping area, provided you carry them in a securely sealed (Secure Tamper Evident Bag, STEBs).
The transport of liquids on board is only permissible in containers with a capacity of up to 100 ml and without exceeding 1 l per passenger. Always transport liquids in a transparent plastic bag measuring 19 × 20 cm with an easy open-close system.

Transportation of specified items is subject to certain conditions, which may vary according to customs regulations and security checks at the airport of each country (origin or destination). On flights to or from the USA, you may be subject to additional checks of your hand baggage and a detailed inspection of your footwear and all electrical and electronic devices you carry. It is also strictly prohibited to carry lighters to this destination in the hand and hold baggage.

Please note that all items must be for personal and domestic use only. To transport items in commercial quantities, please dispatch them as Cargo.

Electroshock weapons, ammunition, and explosives

Electroshock weapons

Electroshock weapons that contain explosives, compressed gases, or lithium batteries. Example: tasers.

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.

Items containing explosives

These include pyrotechnics and other items containing explosives. Examples: Christmas crackers, firecrackers, rockets, or sparklers.

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.

Disabling devices

Disabling devices containing irritating or disabling substances Example: gas and pepper spray.

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.

Packaged ammunition

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- Safe packaging is a requirement for transportation;
- You are only authorized to transport ammunition for personal use and complying with Division 1.4 S standard (UN 0012 or UN 0014 only) in quantities not exceeding 5 kg gross weight per person;
- Combining allowances for more than one passenger in a single or multiple packages is not supported.

Batteries and equipment powered by batteries or fuel

Baggage containing lithium batteries (smart bags)

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval. Batteries must be removable and not exceed 2.7 Wh or 0.3 g of lithium metal. Weight and size limits must also be complied with.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted, provided that batteries are removed and transported in the cabin individually protected. The requirements for spare batteries must also be complied with.

Electronic cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes and similar vaporizers, such as electronic cigars and electronic pipes.

Carry as hand baggage: permitted.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.
Additional requirements:
- Be sure to transport each item safely and adopt the appropriate preventive measures to avoid unintentional ignition;
- The transported objects must remain stored throughout the flight;
- Operating or charging these devices or batteries on the aircraft is strictly prohibited.

Spare or loose batteries

Batteries / Alkaline batteries, lithium metal batteries (up to 2 g) or lithium-ion batteries (up to 100 Wh).

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval for more than 20 units.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.

Spare batteries (including power banks) must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

They must:

Remain in their original packaging;
Have their exposed terminals isolated with adhesive tape;
Be placed in a separate plastic bag or protective pouch;

They can only be carried in hand baggage and their use is not permitted at any stage of the flight.

Each person can carry a maximum of 20 spare batteries, however the operator may allow you to carry more than 20 spare batteries.

Spare or loose lithium/metal batteries 100-160 Wh or 2-8 g

Electronic devices powered by lithium batteries, including PED (1) (Portable Electronic Devices) or PMED (2) (Portable Medical Electronic Devices).

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.
Additional requirements:
- Each passenger can carry a maximum of two spare batteries in their hand baggage;
- To avoid short circuits, keep batteries separate from one another.

(1) Lithium-ion batteries only in electronic devices and PMED (power between 100 and 160 Wh, or 2 and 8 g). e 8 g).
(2) Metal batteries only in PMED (power between 2 and 8 g).

Spare or loose non-spillable batteries

Non-spillable batteries with a maximum of 12 V and 100 Wh.

Carry as hand baggage: permitted.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.
Additional requirements:
- Each passenger can carry a maximum of two spare batteries;
- To avoid short circuits, keep batteries separate from one another.

Devices powered by lithium batteries of 100 Wh or 2 g

Portable electronic devices for personal use that are powered by lithium metal or lithium-ion batteries, including medical devices, such as portable oxygen concentrators (POC), and electronic equipment, such as cameras, mobile phones, laptops, and tablets.

Carry as hand baggage: permitted (requires approval for quantities above 15 units).
Carry as hold baggage: permitted (requires approval for quantities above 15 units).
Additional requirements:
- Lithium metal content must not exceed 2 g, and for lithium-ion batteries, the rating must not exceed 100 Wh;
- Each passenger may carry a maximum of 15 personal electronic devices;
- Please turn off all devices and protect them from damage or accidental activation when transported in hold baggage.

Devices powered by lithium / metal batteries 100-160 Wh or 2-8 g

Electronic devices powered by lithium batteries, including PED (1) (Portable Electronic Devices) or PMED (2) (Portable Medical Electronic Devices).

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- Upon approval, you can transport the electronic devices listed above and the respective batteries;
- In the aircraft's hold, devices must remain turned off and protected to avoid damage or accidental activation.

(1) Lithium-ion batteries only in electronic devices and PMED (power between 100 and 160 Wh, or 2 and 8 g).
(2) Metal batteries only in PMED (power between 2 and 8 g).

Portable devices with non-spillable batteries

Portable electronic devices with non-spillable batteries (up to 12 V and 100 Wh).

Carry as hand baggage: permitted.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted.
Additional requirements:
- You can carry a maximum of two spare batteries;
- Batteries must not exceed 12 V and 100 Wh.

Battery-powered leisure items

Battery-powered leisure items (small vehicles), equipped with a removable or non-removable lithium battery, used for personal transportation, including rideable suitcases (e.g. hoverboards, mini-Segways, Segway, airwheels, solowheel, e-bikes and diver propulsion vehicle):

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.

Drones

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted.
Additional requirements:
- Remove the batteries from the device and transport them in a suitably protected cabin baggage, if possible.

Camping stoves and fuel canisters

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- Transporting camping stoves and fuel canisters containing previously flammable liquid is permitted, provided that the fuel tank of the appliance is empty and, consequently, complying with all the measures to eliminate any danger.

Engines (internal combustion / fuel cells)

Carry as hand baggage: only permitted transportation as Cargo.
Carry as hold baggage: only permitted transportation as Cargo.

Fuel cells

Fuel cells that power portable electronic devices such as cameras, cell phones, laptops, and video cameras.

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- Fuel cells must be removed and transported as hand baggage in the cabin.

Battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility aids

Devices containing spillable batteries

Battery-operated wheelchairs or other similar mobility aids powered by flooded batteries.

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- Wheelchairs and mobility assistance devices must be loaded, stored, secured, and unloaded in an upright position;
- Batteries must remain installed;
- Protect the battery terminals to avoid short circuits. Regarding flooded batteries, always carry them in a suitable packaging;
- If a battery is securely attached to the wheelchair or a mobility assistance device, it can remain in place, but ensure the terminals are thoroughly protected.

Devices with non-spillable batteries

Battery-operated wheelchairs or other similar mobility aids with non-spillable batteries.

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- Wheelchairs or mobility assistance devices must be loaded, stored, secured, and unloaded in an upright position;
- Batteries must remain installed;
- Battery terminals must be protected against short circuits;
- In compliance with current regulations, you can transport one additional wet, non-spillable spare battery, two additional dry batteries, or nickel-metal hydride spare batteries.

Devices powered by lithium batteries

Lithium-ion batteries for wheelchairs and other mobility aids.

Carry as hand baggage: permitted but requires approval
Carry as hold baggage: permitted but requires approval
Additional requirements:
- Batteries must comply with the requirements of each of the tests in the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, Section 38.3;
- Protect the battery terminals to avoid short circuits;;
- The battery must be securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid and disconnected from the electrical circuits according to the manufacturer's instructions – for example, disconnect the battery or turn off the main switch;
- Remove the battery according to the manufacturer's instructions if the mobility aid does not provide adequate protection;
- If the battery is removable and the device does not provide adequate protection, disconnect it according to the manufacturer's instructions. The battery must not exceed 300 Wh;
- In cases where the batteries are not removable, there is no Wh limit;
- You may carry a maximum of one spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spare batteries not exceeding 160 Wh each;
- Protect all removed or spare batteries against possible damage. You can carry them as hand baggage in the cabin.

Assistance and comfort items

Batteries and structures that are fixed to the aircraft

With the exception of the children seats, for safety reasons, on board TAP aircraft it is not possible to use comfort equipment that:

Contain lithium batteries;
Exceed the dimensions provided for hand baggage;
Attach to structures present in the plane itself (tables, chairs or others);
Interfere with the correct use of seat belts;
Prevent crews from accessing aircraft equipment;
In case of turbulence, they can be left loose (example: suitcases that convert into beds);
May interfere with the comfort of other passengers.

Inflatable cubes to be placed in the foot area can only be used if they have a valve that allows them to be deflated quickly, so that they can be quickly deflated and accommodated in abnormal or emergency situations.
During taxi, take-off, landing and whenever indicated by the crew, your comfort equipment cannot be used and must be stored with the rest of your hand luggage.
If in doubt, our crews will be able to clarify which equipment can be used on board and in which phases of the flight it can be used.

To use equipment that provides greater comfort for passengers with special needs, it is necessary to submit an authorization request to TAP. This request must be made at least 48h before the flight so that it can be reviewed.

Compressed gas cartridges, cylinders, and aerosols

Non-flammable, non-toxic aerosols

Non-flammable aerosols, with no associated risks, for sports activities or personal use.

Carry as hand baggage: permitted.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted.
Additional requirements:
- The total net quantity of non-radioactive, non-flammable medicinal or hygiene articles and non-toxic aerosols must not exceed 2 kg or 2 l, and the net amount of each article must not exceed 0.5 kg or 0.5 l. These quantities are permitted in the cabin if purchased after the Security Control at the airport;
- The discharge valves on aerosols must include a protection cap or another suitable system to prevent the accidental release of contents.

Small and non-flammable gas cartridges

Carry as hand baggage: permitted but requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted but requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- Maximum of two small cartridges installed in a self-inflating personal safety device to be used by a single person;
- Only a maximum of two devices is allowed per passenger;
- There can only be a maximum of two small spare cartridges per device or four cartridges with up to 50 ml of water volume.

Gas cartridges in various sporting equipment

Carry as hand baggage: only permitted without the gas cartridge.
Carrying as hold baggage: only permitted without the gas cartridge.

Avalanche rescue backpacks

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- It is permitted to carry one rescue backpack per person containing compressed gas cartridges or a pyrotechnic trigger mechanism with a maximum of 200 mg of activation material;
- Pack the backpack with caution to prevent accidental activation;
- Airbags inside backpacks must include pressure relief valves.

Hydrocarbon gas-powered hair curlers

Carry as hand baggage: permitted.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted.
Additional requirements:
- You are allowed only one hydrocarbon gas-powered hair curler per passenger.
- You cannot use the device on board and protect it adequately for the trip;
- Transportation of refueling gas is not permitted.

Gas cylinders to power prosthetic devices

Small cylinders of non-flammable and non-toxic gas for the operation of mechanical prostheses.

Carry as hand baggage: permitted.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted.
Additional requirements:
- The permit includes the necessary replacement cylinders, considering the flight's duration.

Scientific, professional, and personal articles

Medical or hygiene articles (non-radioactive)

It includes aerosols such as hairspray, perfumes, colognes, and medical supplies containing alcohol.

Carry as hand baggage: permitted.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted.
Additional requirements:
- The total net quantity of all articles must not exceed 2 kg or 2 l, and the net amount of each single article must not exceed 0.5 kg or 0.5 l. These quantities are permitted in the cabin if purchased after the Security Control at the airport;
- The discharge valves on aerosols must include a protection cap or another suitable system to prevent the accidental release of contents.

Heat producing articles

Heat-producing articles or battery-powered equipment capable of producing extreme heat to the point of causing a fire when activated. Examples: flashlights and soldering irons

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- Pack the heat-producing component of the battery separately to prevent activation during transportation;
- Protect all detached batteries against short circuits.

Alcoholic beverages – ABV of 24 to 70%

Carry as hand baggage: permitted, if authorized by local authorities.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted.
Additional requirements:
- When purchased outside the airport, the alcoholic beverages must comply with the limits for transporting liquids on board;
- When purchased inside the airport, in the Duty-Free shopping area, all alcoholic beverages must comply with the rules of the local authorities of the final destination;
- Each passenger can only carry a total of 5 l. Transporting all the beverages in their original packaging is mandatory.

Alcoholic beverages – ABV higher than 70%

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.

Permeation devices

Carry as hand baggage: only permitted to transport as Cargo.
Carry as hold baggage: only permitted to transport as Cargo.

Isothermal packaging with liquid nitrogen / refrigerated incorporated nitrogen

Example: dry shipper, fully absorbed in porous material, only including non-hazardous contents.

Carry as hand baggage: permitted.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted.

Chemical agent monitors

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.

Additional requirements:
- Transportation requires a duly accredited person to hold a detailed article declaration.

Skydiving equipment

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- Deactivate the Automatic Activation System during transportation;
- If it includes batteries, they must be detached and the poles insulated.

Fertilizers, insecticides, paints, oxidizing substances

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.

Matches and small lighters

Strike anywhere matches, blue flame, cigar lighters, or lighters powered by lithium batteries.

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited, but you may carry a box of matches or a small lighter that does not contain unabsorbed liquid fuel other than liquefied gas, except on flights to and from the USA, which prohibits carrying lighters.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.

Dry ice

Carbon dioxide as solid form, used to package perishable goods or items considered dangerous.

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.
Additional requirements:
- It cannot exceed 2.5 kg per person, and the packaging or baggage must permit the release of carbon dioxide;
- In the aircraft's hold baggage, it is mandatory to label "dry ice" or "solid carbon dioxide" to indicate the dry ice's net weight or use an identifier referring to a weight of 2.5 kg or less.

Lamps

Carry as hand baggage: permitted, when transported in the original packaging and intended for domestic use.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted, when transported in the original packaging and intended for domestic use.

Security bags

Security bags, safes, and money sacks, particularly those containing dangerous substances such as lithium batteries or pyrotechnic material.

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.

Magnetic materials

Carry as hand baggage: permitted.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted.
Additional requirements:
- Materials causing a deviation of more than 2 degrees are prohibited;
- To check the eligibility of materials, place them on the floor and, using a compass approximately 2 m from the surface of the package, check for movement higher than 2 degrees.

Medical items

Oxygen or air (gas cylinders for medical use)

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: requires approval.

Additional requirements::
- Oxygen or gaseous air cylinders for medical use during the flight are only permitted if TAP cannot provide the required service. It requires a medical declaration to transport these items on board;
- If the oxygen cylinders are required only for use at the destination, approval from the Airline is mandatory;
- Cylinders must not exceed 5 kg of gross weight and 200 bar of maximum pressure;
- Transport the bottle in an external packaging, approved by the manufacturer, to protect the outlet valve;
- The transportation of liquid oxygen systems and personal oxygen cylinders is prohibited;
- Personal compressed oxygen systems are prohibited on flights to, from, or via the USA.

Non-infectious specimens in flammable liquid

Carry as hand baggage: only permitted as Cargo.
Carry as hold baggage: only permitted as Cargo.

Pacemakers

Radioisotope cardiac markers or other devices, including lithium battery-operated devices.

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited, except when implanted or equipped externally on the passenger.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited, except when implanted or equipped externally on the passenger.

Thermometers or barometers containing mercury

Carry as hand baggage: requires approval.
Carry as hold baggage: prohibited.

Additional requirements:
- The transportation of thermometers or barometers containing mercury is permitted when being carried by a representative of a government meteorological office or similar authorized agency;
- Pack these items in sturdy external packaging with a sealed liner or leak-proof bag and mercury-resistant material.

Medical or clinical thermometers containing mercury

Carry as hand baggage: prohibited.
Carry as hold baggage: permitted.
Additional requirements:
- It is permitted to carry one medical or clinical thermometer per person for personal use;
- Always transport the thermometer in its protective box.

Hand baggage

Pistols, firearms, and other devices that fire projectiles: devices that can or appear to be capable of causing serious injury by firing a projectile, including:

Firearms of any type, such as pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns;
Toy weapons, replicas, or firearms imitations that resemble real weapons;
Firearm components, excluding telescopic sights;
Air and CO2 pressure weapons, such as pistols, pellet guns, shotguns, and slingshots;
Signal pistols and alarm pistols;
Crossbows, bows, and arrows;
Spearfishing weapons;
Slings and slingshots.

Neutralizing devices: devices specifically designed to stun or immobilize, including:

Electroshock devices, such as stun guns, dart guns, tasers, and electric batons;
Devices for stunning and slaughtering animals;
Neutralizing or incapacitating chemicals, gases, and aerosols, such as mace, pepper spray, tear gas, acid gas, and animal-repellent aerosols.

Sharp or cutting objects: objects that can cause severe injuries due to their sharp point or edges, including:

Cutting instruments, such as axes, hatchets, and cleavers;
Ice axes and ice picks;
Razor blades;
X-acto knives;
Knives with blades longer than 6 cm;
Scissors with blades longer than 6 cm measured from the axis;
Sharp or cutting martial arts equipment;
Swords and sabers.

Work tools: tools that can cause severe injury or threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

Crowbars;
Drills and drill bits, including cordless portable electric drills;
Tools with blades or shafts longer than 6 cm, such as screwdrivers and chisels;
Saws, including cordless portable electric saws;
Blowtorches;
Dowel guns and nail guns.

Blunt instruments: objects that can cause severe injury if used in a physical assault, including:

Baseball and softball bats;
Clubs and batons, such as nun chucks, billy clubs, and truncheons;
Martial arts equipment.

Explosives, incendiary substances, and devices: explosive and incendiary materials and devices that can cause severe injury or threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

Ammunition;
Explosive cartridges;
Detonators and fuses;
Replicas or imitations of explosive devices;
Mines, grenades, and other military explosives;
Fireworks and other pyrotechnic articles;
Smoke generators;
Dynamite, gunpowder, and plastic explosives.

Hold baggage

Explosives, incendiary substances, and devices: explosive and incendiary materials and devices that can cause severe injury or threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

Ammunition;
Explosive cartridges;
Detonators and fuses;
Mines, grenades, and other military explosives;
Fireworks and other pyrotechnic articles;
Smoke generators;
Dynamite, gunpowder, and plastic explosives.
