Severe allergies
Children aged eight to eleven with severe allergies must travel with a parent, a responsible adult or a support person aged sixteen or over. The same applies to young people aged twelve to eighteen if they cannot self-administer their medications.
As we cannot control the presence of allergens that other passengers may bring on board (for example, peanuts and animal hair), it is possible that these allergens remain on the seat cushions, or between them, despite the airplane's hygiene policies.
To help you reduce the risk of exposure to allergens to which you are sensitive, the necessary measures will be taken to ensure the creation of a safety zone for you.
What is a safety zone?
- It is an area, inside the plane, near the seat of the passenger with an allergy, which aims to limit as much as possible that an allergic reaction occurs on board;
- The exact area or size of this safety zone will vary depending on the flight in question. It is necessary to request a safety zone at least forty-eight hours in advance;
- The remaining passengers sitting in the same seat segment (seats immediately adjacent to the seat of the passenger with an allergy, not extending to seats separated by an aisle) are informed about:
- the condition of the passenger who suffers from a severe allergy (this passenger is not identified);
- what is the allergen in question, so that they avoid consuming or using products that may trigger an allergic reaction.
- If, in this segment of seats, there is contact with this allergen, and there are alternative seats available, the passenger with an allergy will be moved to a different seat.
How to request a safety zone?
To request the safety zone, you must request special assistance at least forty-eight hours before the flight departure, by filling out this form.
It is important to note that:
TAP is not expected to provide a full guarantee that the cabin is not contaminated by the allergen.
TAP does not assume any responsibility for the information provided on the ingredients' labels of the packaged food it serves on board its aircraft.
Severe allergies to dogs or cats
If you have a severe allergy to dogs or cats, always carry your medication with you, as well as hand sanitizer. Take additional precautions, such as carrying wet wipes to clean the areas adjacent to your seat (example seat cushion, seat back and space between cushions).
Severe food allergies and other allergies
Although we always do our best to help and protect those who have severe allergies, please remember that we cannot fully control the environment inside the plane or what other Customers may bring on board.
What can you do to mitigate your allergic reaction?
Despite our best efforts, the products we serve and sell on board the plane contain several ingredients you may be allergic to. If you are allergic or sensitive to products that can be found in the cabin of a plane, you can request a special meal through Manage your Booking.
In addition, you must bring in your hand baggage:
- The appropriate medications for your allergic condition, as prescribed by your doctor, which should be kept in a way you can access them quickly;
- Hand sanitizer;
- Cleaning wipes for the areas adjacent to your seat;
- Your own food or snacks.
